It is estimated that 22 per cent of the UK’s workforce are lone workers.


The term carries a broad definition, including the self-employed (of whom there are 4.5 million in the UK according to the latest ONS statistics**), those who work away from the workplace, and employees of organisations, such as delivery drivers, who work off-base on their own.

The numbers of people choosing to work in this way increased during the recession and it was thought numbers might dip when the economy picked up. The numbers have steadied, however, and it’s thought that the positive elements of working alone remain a big draw.
